History

In more detail:

• 13th century: the brick building first appeared on the market square
• 1471: it is said that a wine-cellar was kept inside the building
• 1521: acquired by Johan von Holtz, from Cologne who hired Italian workers to rebuild it. It is said that Vincenzio da Parmataro, the main architect, drew his inspiration from Venecian palaces.
• 1528: the date found on the portal of the building is the date the construction was complete along with the sentence “Raised by a divine hand and devoted to God’s grace”
• 1801: it is said that the building hosted a social club within
• 1902: despite strong opposition from historians, conservationalists and residents, the new owners, company “Goldene Krone” demolished the renaissance building to replace it with a modern department store.
• 1904: “Zur Goldene Krone” was built by architects Kayser & Groszheim from Berlin giving the building a monumental, Art Nouveau-Renaissance form. Inside one would find the famous “Golden Crown” café, a meeting place for all and an inspiration for the more artistic.
• 1945: during the siege in Wroclaw the building was destroyed.
• 1957-1960: On the steel structure and massive ceilings, which were the only ones that survived, the building that one sees today was built resembling it’s primary renaissance style.
• 1959: a ceramic golden crown is added to the corner of the building in memory of the building’s history
• 1970: it is entered in the register of monuments as a department store and operates as such for the following years
• 2011: acquisition of the building by “Otis” company
• 2019: “Korona Hotel” opens
