Jatki
Stare Jatki is one of the most atmospheric and characteristic places on the city map. The narrow lane between the Oder and the Market Square teemed for centuries with a very different life than today – from the Middle Ages butchery establishments and meat shops operated here, supplying residents with fresh products.
In memory of this history, in 1998 the Pomnik Zwierząt Rzeźnych was erected here – a group of realistic, bronze-cast figures depicting a goat, a piglet, a rooster, a goose with an egg, a rabbit and a calf. The sculptures provoke strong emotions: from a warm smile and the urge to take a photo to a moment of reflection on the former purpose of this place. Regardless of the reaction, it is hard to pass by them indifferently.
Today Jatki have changed their appearance. Instead of meat stalls, the street now houses art galleries, artist studios and craft shops. You can buy watercolours with Wrocław motifs, ceramics, jewellery or original souvenirs. The intimate buildings and cobbled surface give a unique atmosphere to a walk down the narrow street.
