Wrocław dwarfs - find them all!
Wrocław's gnomes have become one of the city's most recognizable and beloved attractions. Today it's hard to imagine a walk through Wrocław without looking out for the small, brown figurines hidden by townhouses, on bridges, in shop windows or on windowsills.
Their history dates back to the 1980s, when the gnome was a symbol of the Orange Alternative – a happening movement opposing the authorities of the time. Over time they became a charming emblem of the city. The first of them was Papa Krasnal, who still watches over passersby in the center.
Currently there are several hundred figurines in the urban space, and each of them has its own name, profession and character. There are firefighter gnomes, bankers, musicians, students, and even sleepyheads or foodies. We often pass them in haste, without considering their history, and those cleverly hidden are easy to miss.
A walk following the gnomes is an excellent idea for an active and unconventional way to explore the city — both for children and adults. It's a treasure-hunt-style game that lets you discover less obvious corners of Wrocław and look at it with a wink.
