Mathematical Tower, Marianum Oratory, Leopoldine Hall

Leopoldine Hall is one of the most valuable tourist attractions of Wrocław and a true gem of secular Baroque in Central Europe. It was built in the years 1728–1732 as the representative hall of the then Leopoldina Academy, today's University of Wrocław. From the very beginning it was intended to emphasize the university's standing and the power of the Habsburg monarchy.

It takes its name from Emperor Leopold I, the university's founder. The interior of the hall is a spectacular work of Baroque art in which architecture, sculpture and painting create a harmonious, theatrical composition. Illusionistic frescoes on the ceiling visually enlarge the space, and the rich decorations – personifications of virtues, allegories of knowledge and wisdom – carry deep symbolism. A central place is occupied by the podium with the figure of the emperor, underlining the connection between scholarship and the authority of the state.

Visiting the Hall is not only about admiring the historic interior but also a journey back in time to the Baroque era – full of splendour, symbols and artistic grandeur. It is one of those places that make an impression even on people who are not usually interested in art history.

With a ticket to the University of Wrocław Museum you can also visit:

• Oratorium Marianum – the former music hall known for its excellent acoustics,

• Mathematical Tower – a viewing point offering a panorama of the Oder, the Old Town and Ostrów Tumski,

• museum exhibitions presenting the history of the university.
